Krásna dcéra bohatého atlantského plantážnika Scarlett O'Harová (Vivien Leigh) strávila bezstarostné detstvo i roky dospievania životom na milovanom rodinnom pozemku menom Tara. Ešte veľmi mladučká sa zaľúbila sa do príťažlivého, no nepriebojného Ashleyho Wilkesa (Leslie Howard) - ten sa však oženil s tichou a láskavou Melanie Hamiltonovou (Olivia de Havilland), ktorá sa časom stala jej najlepšou priateľkou. Urazená a ohrdnutá Scarlett, nezvyknutá prehrávať, si preto zo vzdoru vzala za muža Melanieinho bratranca Charlesa (Rand Brooks)... Keď vypukne občianska vojna a muži odchádzajú bojovať, odchádza aj zvodný karierista Rhett Butler (Clark Cable), ktorý sa intenzívne usiluje o Scarlettinu priazeň. Ženy odídu do Atlanty, kde Melanie porodí. Keď mesto obsadí vojsko Únie, pomôže obom ženám utiecť do bezpečia práve Rhett. Charles vo vojne zahynie a Scarlett s Melanie sa opäť vracajú na Taru. Aby Scarlett mohla zaplatiť veľké dane, vydá sa za boháča Franka Kennedyho (Carroll Nye), aj ten však zahynie. Teraz sa už konečne môže stať Rhettovou ženou - naozaj to však chce? (TV Markíza)
